Petroleum resin is named because of its source of petroleum derivatives. It has the characteristics of low acid value, good miscibility, water resistance, ethanol resistance and chemical resistance, chemical stability to acid and alkali, and good regulation of viscosity and thermal stability. Petroleum resins are not used alone, but are used as accelerators, regulators, modifiers and other resins.

Petroleum resins are generally classified into four types, such as C5 aliphatic (lipid), C9 aromatic (aromatic hydrocarbons), DCPD (cyclic lipodienes, cycloaliphatic) and pure monomers (such as poly SM, AMS (alpha methyl styrene)) and other types, all of which are hydrocarbons, so they are also called hydrocarbons.

Petroleum resin production and application are mostly C9 petroleum resin and C5 petroleum resin.

c9 petroleum resin

C9 petroleum resin refers to a resin consisting of "olefin or cyclo olefin polymerization or copolymerization with aldehydes, aromatics, terpenes, etc." containing nine carbon atoms.

C9 petroleum resin, also known as aromatic petroleum resin, is divided into thermal polymerization, cold polymerization, tar and other types, in which cold polymerization products have light color and good quality. The average molecular weight of 2000~5000. is light yellow to light brown flake, granular or lumpy solid, transparent and glossy, and relative density 0.97~1.04. The softening point is 80~140 C. The vitrification temperature is 81 C. The index of refraction is 1.512. The flash point is 260 degrees centigrade. Acid value 0.1~1.0. The iodine value is 30~120. Soluble in acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexane, two chloroethane, ethyl acetate, toluene, gasoline and so on. Insoluble in ethanol and water. It has a ring structure and contains some double bonds. There are no polar or functional groups in the molecular structure and no chemical activity. Acid and alkali resistance, chemical resistance and good water resistance. Poor bonding performance, high brittleness and poor aging resistance, it should not be used alone. It has good compatibility with phenolic resin, ancient Malone resin, terpene resin, SBR and SIS, but because of its high polarity, it has poor compatibility with non-polar polymers. Flammable. Non-toxic.

C5 petroleum resin

C5 petroleum resin has high adhesive strength, good fast viscosity, stable adhesion, moderate melting viscosity, good heat resistance, good compatibility with polymer matrix and price.

Low grade characteristics gradually began to replace natural resin tackifier (rosin and terpene resin).

The characteristics of C5 petroleum resin in hot melt adhesive are good fluidity, good wettability, good viscosity and outstanding initial viscosity. Excellent aging resistance, light color, transparent, low odour, low volatile. In the hot melt adhesive, ZC - 1288D series can be used as tackifier, and can be mixed with other tackifier to improve the properties of hot melt adhesive.
